Our Services
We provide consulting services at all stages of research to solve complex problems for businesses and nonprofits. To be most effective, clients come to us before their study begins and we work with them to thoroughly understand the research questions they want to answer. Working collaboratively, we develop a design that is practical, efficient, and provides answers to our clients’ research questions. As the study is implemented, we are in regular contact with our clients to respond to day-to-day questions and provide updates on any problems they may encounter. We analyze the results often using advanced statistical modeling techniques and provide reports that interpret the data in easy-to-understand language.
Research and Development (R&D) Tax Credit
“This is exactly what we need. Thank you for turning this around so quickly.”
Partner, Top 20 Public Accounting Firm
R&D studies for claiming tax credits is useful for a variety of clients, from those with smaller populations to much larger ones and for clients with good records to clients without such records. Using a valid random sample to calculate the tax credit saves time and money and can often be more accurate than documenting QREs for the entire population. We design defensible samples that require smaller sample sizes and result in lower costs and fewer disruptions to the work place. With in-depth knowledge of IRS procedures and requirements, we plan for uncertainty in the IRS audit process and follow IRS requirements in their Revenue Procedure 2011-42. We provide documentation in an audit-ready report with results that can be easily replicated by IRS staff.
Cost Segregation
“They know anything and everything that you’d ever want to know about sampling!!”
Managing Director, Accounting Firm
Cost segregation uses complex statistical sample design and estimation procedures that allow for statistically valid random sampling for a very small number of entities. The tax savings can be significant when depreciating is accelerated from the standard 27.5 or 39 year schedule to a smaller number of years, such as 5, 7, 9, 15 or 20 years. We have used cost segregation design and analysis with a variety of clients that include: 27 Industrial properties (sample of 7); 27 restaurants (sample of 6); 13 multifamily properties (sample of 4); 49 dealership (sample of 9). We provide documentation] in an audit-ready report. We follow IRS requirements in their Cost Segregation Audit Techniques Guide with results that can be easily replicated by IRS staff.
Litigation/Arbitration
“The BDS critique looks very good. Pokes good holes in the sampling approach being offered as the judge anticipates from us. Thanks all!!!”
Chief Counsel, major government agency
“[BDS’ response to opposing counsel] was very helpful, and unsurprisingly, it explains how their expert missed the big picture.”
Partner, Litigation Law Firm
Attorneys request our services in matters relating to healthcare, insurance, product liability, finance, audits, fraud and theft, labor and employment, public policy, government regulation, and education. Using statistical sampling and modeling techniques, we have the capability to make sense of massive quantities of data and to design valid statistical studies that are helpful to decision-makers. We design random samples for populations such as health insurance claims in dispute that save adjudication time and costs. We also serve as statistical consultants and expert witness in litigations to ensure that the data, sampling design and procedures, and modeling techniques are valid and unbiased. We provide reports for arbitration and trial judges that are clearly written with easy to follow statistical reasoning. On reading a BDS report, an arbitration judge said, “This is the first time I understood random sampling.”
